Nestled in the heart of the forested Greensprings is Pinehurst School, a hub of education and enrichment. The Pinehurst School District offers an extraordinary education for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. Instruction focuses on providing a strong foundation in reading, math and writing while engaging students in art, music and drama. Students are given opportunities throughout the year to feature their work and take part in public performances. Our Holiday play is a long-standing community tradition.
Pinehurst School enrollment averages between 20-30 students which allows for individual and small group instruction in all subjects. The school relies on parent and community volunteers to supplement the educational program and provide vision and guidance through membership on the School Board and the School Council. After graduating from the eighth grade, Pinehurst students in grades nine through twelve attend Ashland High School to complete their public education.
The main building of “the little red school house,” was built in 1930 and has three classrooms, a stage, a media center and an office. The “annex,” which was added in 1986, is a multi-purpose building with a kitchen and a large room for music instruction, multi-media presentations and community gatherings. The gym is equipped with basketball hoops, a climbing wall, gymnastics equipment, ropes and rings and other recreational equipment. Housed in the gym is a pottery studio, complete with turning wheels, ceramic supplies and a kiln. Other features of the school include a solar greenhouse, a large front lawn, a playground and a grassy field used for baseball, soccer and other outdoor activities.
Community members are invited to become involved in the school in a variety of roles. School Board meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM in the Annex. The School Council also meets on the second Tuesday of the month, before the School Board meeting, at 6:00PM. The Pinehurst Foundation meets periodically through the year. Parents and community members make valuable contributions by providing transportation on fieldtrips, volunteering as academic tutors in the classroom and student mentors for the annual Self-Directed Learning Program. Please contact the office to find out about visiting the school and participating in the many academic and social activities provided for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade.
