FOUNDATIONAL CORE CURRICULUM
The core subjects of math and literacy are the foundation of the Pinehurst School curriculum. Each morning students spend focused time on these subjects, receiving direct instruction in small groups while also gaining practice during independent, self-regulated work time. Our math instruction not only builds a foundation of strong conceptual understanding, but also prepares students to be flexible problem solvers that are able to collaborate with others and explain their thinking clearly. In ELA, students develop their reading, writing, and speaking skills in applied units centered around science and social studies topics. Our science of reading aligned approach centers background knowledge while also developing proficient readers and writers who can use these skills to actively engage with the world around them.

ENRICHMENT CLASSES
In addition to our core curriculum, Pinehurst School offers enrichment classes to expand and deepen student’s understanding of core subjects and the arts. Over the course of the year students will participate in a wide variety of enrichment classes including visual arts, performing arts, ceramics, mindfulness and movement, culinary arts, PE, music, library, and science club. Students receive instruction from our experienced staff as well as local community members.
Performing Arts
The performing arts are a foundational part of Pinehurst School. Students participate in two performances each year. In the winter, students prepare for our Winter Arts Showcase, an evening that includes a musical performance with student art on display. Each spring, the entire school community collaborates to put on a Spring Play. Both experiences build amazing confidence in our students and are opportunities for students to showcase their learning to the wider community.
Culinary Arts
Each week students head to the gym or outside for Mindfulness and Movement with Ginelle Dekker. Students move their bodies and focus on their breathing while also building self-knowledge and a tool kit of strategies for self-regulation.

Science Explorers Club
One a month students participate in Science Club! Students have a strong voice in determining the theme for each club meeting with topics ranging from microscopes, to AI, to biometrics.
Library
Once a week students visit our newly improved library. Students have the opportunity to check out independent reading books each week ranging from non-fiction picks to graphic novels with the support and guidance of our dynamic Library Aide, Amanda Holbo.
Discovery Block
Discovery Block is a whole school enrichment class that focuses on multi-age instruction in social studies, science, and SEL/health. While our ELA curriculum is designed around grade specific science and social studies topics, Discovery Block is focused on place based learning in these areas. Our themes change each year with past units focusing on the history of Oregon’s first people, raising rainbow trout, and studying the flora and fauna of the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
Special Education
Special education students at Pinehurst School are fully integrated into general education classes. General education teachers have experience and training in teaching special education students. Additionally, we have a Coordinator of Student Services through the Southern Oregon Educational Service District (SOESD) that helps manage their Individual Education Plans and other accommodations. The Southern Oregon ESD also provides specialized student services including: Psychological / Behavioral Services, Speech – Language and Audiology Services, Administrative / Support Service, and Behavioral programs.
Talented & Gifted
Talented and Gifted (TAG) students are an important part of every school community across Oregon. In Oregon, districts and schools must plan for how they will meet the academic and social-emotional needs of TAG students, specific to their local context, and communicate these plans to the students and families they serve.
Mindfulness & Movement

English Language Learners
Pinehurst School uses a variety of research-based approaches for educating English learners. Elementary students receive English Language Development (ELD) instruction via ELD Pullout as well as receiving sheltered English instruction in their core classes. Our lead teacher provides ELD Pullout support and is currently working toward her ESOL Certificate at Oregon State University.
